Description

Girona is an ancient walled city perched on a hill above the Onyar and Ter rivers. Founded by Iberians and later named Gerunda by the Romans, it was an important stop on the Via Augusta connecting Iberia to Rome. The city’s most significant period was the Middle Ages, when its proximity to the French border made it a focal point in regional conflicts. Many main buildings date from this era.

The 15th-century Girona Cathedral dominates the skyline with its notably wide unsupported Gothic arch. The medieval streets invite exploration, especially around the Jewish quarter. The lower part of the city features steep alleys and brightly painted riverside houses along the Onyar, creating Girona’s characteristic image. Bridges crossing the river include the lightweight Gómez bridge and the Ferreries Velles bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel in 1877.

This tour also highlights the Game of Thrones filming locations from the sixth season. Local guides share insights into Girona’s history, Jewish heritage, and local legends throughout this comprehensive visit.
